The young'uns don't know nothing about anything

Growing old has taught me a few things. One of them being that, while I remember what it was like to be a kid, the things I got up to with my friends, where we would hang out, how we would get around town, or sneak out to (do) things we shouldn't. I've learnt that I don't really understand what it's like these days for the kids, I mean, I can see what apps their using, and how they use it. But I can only go back to my teenage mind, and relate with the thoughts I had in those days. It was tough then, and I don't think it's gotten any easier for the kids today, in fact I think it's gotten worse.

It's all dark, and my eyes are open

While we're on the downward spiral of depression, and things getting worse. Don't get me wrong, there's a tonne of good things for being a kid these days, but we're lying to ourselves if we say oh kids these days, they have it so easy. What? You honestly think they have it easier? Ok, sure, they can order meals through their phones, and always be in contact with their group of friends. So sure, socialising is easier, but is that such a good thing? (note: i am not saying to go right into your kids room and confiscate their phone and ban them from going out with their friends).

And it's interesting, how quickly we forget about the dark jokes we made, about killing ourselves, or how we wish we were dead. We grew up with MCR, AFI, BFMV, FOB, we had the emo music as a background track through high-school. All the dumb shit we did, we didn't do it for tiktok, we still did it for our friends though, for that social validation. That's what the next generation is doing, just there's more competition out there for them. We were so busy making the world smaller, that we didn't see we were crowding everyone out.

Yarr Bitch Yarr

This paragraph is long enough to be a tribute to the dumb shit we did, the lame songs we created, and our bad decisions, while also being short enough to pay respects to those we lost too soon.

Where I am at

I don't know what I'd tell the kids, or what I'd change for them. If anything, I don't think I'd do anything other than listen to them talk. I think that'd help them. They're not really given the platform to just write/talk or get their thoughts out (I mean, hey, here's Neocities, go your hardest). I grew up with MySpace, and all it's spin offs (is VampireFreaks even still running? doesn't look it, Bebo anyone?), we met local friends, through friends and just being stupid online. We grew up with this stuff, and took it with us, but what have we left the kids with? To me, looks like a fucking distopia. Everything is an ad, you're getting tracked on every site you visit, and now you have to deal with these stupid-fucking cookie pop-ups (because you can't just tell the company, "no, fuck off, my answer hasn't changed").

Like honestly, I don't know how I would cope being a kid in this age. New phones coming out every year, but without huge changes. Shit going from a 3310, to a 3510 took 2 years, and even then ONE of the parents of your friends had it, and it took another 2 years before their kid got it. We do all this stuff for the share-holders, but not for our future carers. These kids are supposed to be doctors, janitors, teachers, parents, carers, and here we are, setting them up for failure because we're not supporting them now.

I resent myself enough as is, the last thing I fucking need is the next generation thinking I didn't give a shit about them and treating me as such.

In Conclusion

I want to apologise in advanced for my parents generation, and my generation letting you down as a whole. I know that individually it wont have been too bad for most of you. But we could have gone and done a better job.

Tokens for a tribute

I like writing Haiku's, as they challenge me with my choice of wording. I'll start a page of them at some point. Probably containing a few random ones too.

Reflection

New generation,
Handed shit on a platter.
Why don't they eat it?

A banks response

Young child, you are small.
Dead Rose petals in your hand.
Profit above your life.

Society Collapses

Struggles of humans
We have abandoned reason
Lost faith in science

Hand on shoulder

Young person, I'm ears
Vent to me your frustrations
I can only try
